  • If you can reach a hospital with a stroke unit within 3 hours of the start of the stroke, go straight to that hospital as quickly as possible.
  • If you can only get to hospital 4 hours after the stroke started you will miss the window for clot dissolving treatment. You will need to make the choice whether to go to the nearest hospital or drive the distance to the nearest hospital with a stroke unit as quickly as possible. Regardless of whether or not you are suitable for clot dissolving treatment, specialised stroke unit care still provides a better chance of good recovery.
  • If you live too far away from one of these hospitals, go to the nearest hospital with a casualty department as quickly as possible.
When on the way to the hospital, notify the stroke team at the hospital using the contact numbers listed above.
